Castration is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in equine practice. At our ambulatory practice, we provide a safe, professional, and convenient service, carrying out castrations at your yard whenever appropriate, minimising stress for both horse and owner.
With over 25 years of equine veterinary experience, Dr. Victor Franco performs castrations using modern surgical techniques, with horse welfare and safety always being the highest priorities.
Most healthy colts and stallions can be castrated from around 6–12 months of age, although older horses can also undergo the procedure following a clinical examination.
Before surgery, we perform a thorough health assessment to ensure your horse is a suitable candidate. Both testicles must be fully descended into the scrotum for a routine field castration. If one or both testicles have not descended (a condition known as cryptorchidism or a «rig»), referral for surgery at an equine hospital may be required.

The practice
The surgery itself usually takes around 20–30 minutes. However, you should allow approximately 1–2 hours for preparation, anaesthesia, recovery, and post-operative checks.
Spring and autumn are generally considered the best times of year, as cooler weather and fewer flies help reduce the risk of post-operative complications. However, castrations can be successfully performed throughout much of the year, depending on weather conditions.
No. Following the first 24 hours, controlled daily exercise is encouraged to reduce swelling and promote healing. We will advise you on the most appropriate exercise programme for your horse.
As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks, including swelling, bleeding, infection, or, very rarely, more serious complications. These complications are uncommon, and every precaution is taken to minimise them. We will discuss the procedure, potential risks, and aftercare with you beforehand.
